Happy World Smile Day Cloth Diaper Giveaway!

Looking for a reason to smile? Well, look no further than World Smile Day – an actual holiday that occurs on the first Friday in October each year.

Happy World Smile Day

Happy Smile Day

The holiday was started by the creator of the iconic “smiley face” graphic, Harvey Ball of Worcester, Massachusetts, pictured above. According to World Smile Day’s website, Ball was concerned about the over-commercialization of this graphic and wanted a way to regain the true meaning behind the smiley face. The holiday was intended to be a way to encourage people to take one day to focus on all the ways they could bring smiles to the faces of others.

Smiling at another person costs you nothing at all, yet it can turn someone’s entire day around. This World Smile Day, let’s make the late Mr. Ball proud, by bringing smiles to those around us. Here are a few of my favorite things to witness, favorite places to go and just plain happy things that always seem to bring a smile to my face.

Belly laughs

Happy Smile Day 2

There is something undeniably funny about someone laughing sincerely. You know, the kind of laugh that starts low in your gut and just cannot be contained? Being around that kind of unbridled joy is infectious! Babies are especially great at this, but getting an adult going is sure to bring smiles all around as well.

Getting Messy!

Happy Smile Day 3

Whether it’s paint, mud, grass stains, or glitter, learning by doing is one of life’s most exciting gifts. While cleaning up messes are nobody’s cup of tea, enjoying the moment and seeing how creativity and fun are blossoming makes the messes worth it!

Parties (and Cake!)

Whether you’re turning 1 or 100, parties bring smiles, laughter and usually good food to boot! Parties give you a chance to celebrate the people in your life, and surround you with the people you love dearest!

Time for you

Taking time to sit still and breathe in the moment, or going for a walk by yourself to recenter your focus can bring a smile to your face, and a refreshed spirit and mind. Remember that when you’re busy focusing on all the things it takes to run your household, keep your loved ones fed and happy, and keep the baby’s diaper fresh, having a few moments to yourself can mean the world.

Community Events

Spending time in your community creates bonds and friendships that are unlike any other. Celebrating national holidays, hosting a block party, starting a walking group, or just inviting your neighbors over for a meal can both widen your horizons and the grin on your face! Take the time to get to know each other, and learn a little more about yourself along the way.

Enjoy the outdoors

Taking time to enjoy the outdoors and the beauty of nature in all seasons can light up anyone’s face with a smile. Water play in the summertime, crunching leaves on a cool autumn walk, playing in the rain and snow all winter, and picking wildflowers all springtime long are all guaranteed smile-setters!

Learn Something New

A new dance, a new type of cuisine, a project you’ve been wanting to start – change it up and do something new you’ve been meaning to. Setting aside the time to learn a new skill or work on something you’ve been looking forward to is not only certain to make you smile, but the endorphin rush you get from the success and excitement of completing it will be well worth the energy put into it!

Hold a Hand

Whether you’re offering support or reaching out for it yourself, physical touch is known to help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. Hold hands with your partner, give your toddler a long hug, have a session of skin to skin contact with your newborn – whatever it takes to get those good-feeling hormones running through your veins and bringing you a sense of peace and happiness.

Share the Love!

A smile given is a wonderful thing. No matter how many smiles you give away, you never lose your own! Challenge yourself to smile as many times as you can to the people you encounter in a day. Strangers, neighbors, even your pets want to see that smile of yours! Wear it proud, and see how many smiles you receive in return. This World Smile Day, see how many moments of joy you can find in your day. See how many smiles you can share, and keep Mr. Ball in mind as we try to inspire random acts of kindness and promote happiness all around us!
