How Do You Use The Thirsties Duo Wrap?
The Thirsties Duo Wrap is a waterproof shell (a cloth diaper cover) that goes on the outside of the absorbent diaper part. You will need the absorbent parts. You have several choices for this:
- you can use a flat diaper, that you fold and pin around your baby. If you use these, you’ll need something to pin them with, either pins or snappis.
- you could go with what’s called a fitted diaper. I recommend Mother-ease! (my review is here or you can purchase them here. Those are less intimidating than flats. They look similar to the outer shell part but are soft and absorbent. Some have snaps on them to close them and sometimes not. If they are the ones without snaps, you may want a pin or a snappi.
- you can use prefolds that are just like flats except they are already sewn into a somewhat folded shape. You may want a snappi or pin for these too.

Thirsties Duo Wrap Review
I recently purchased a Thirsties Duo Wrap Cloth Diaper so I could do a review for you and to try out on my kiddos. Thirsties Duo Diapers are a “sleeve” style diaper. Before this review, I had only ever tried one other sleeve-type diaper, the SmartiPants Sleeve Diaper.
Unlike a pocket which only has one opening, the handy sleeve design features openings on both sides of the diaper between the microfleece and waterproof layer. This makes it incredibly easy to stuff.
The Duo Diaper Is Different
To be honest, I have always been a prefolds and cover kind of gal. I found “stuffing” pockets more of a hassle and always dreaded removing the insert to put them in the wash.
I KNOW, I AM WEAK! The Duo Diaper was different. It was so easy to stuff that I had absolutely no complaints, but the best part of all, I did not have to remove the insert for washing. Simply toss your soiled Thirsties Duo Diaper in the laundry, and the inserts will agitate free from the diaper in the washing machine. This was a major selling point for me.
Another aspect of the diaper that really made it stand out to me was the insert they provide with the diaper. Most pockets come with a pretty standard microfiber insert, NOT THIRSTIES.
“Thirsties’ specialty inserts feature two layers of serged microfiber terry snapped together with five serged layers of hemp jersey; seven thirsty layers in all! Microfiber terry is a fast absorber designed to rest closest to your baby’s skin (beneath the microfleece sleeve); hemp is a stable absorber and pairs perfectly behind the microfiber terry to add more absorbency and to prevent compression leaking.”-Thirsties
These inserts were amazing. Honestly, I think they may be the most absorbent insert I own. Hemp is a super thirsty fabric and can hold a lot. When the hemp is placed behind the microfiber, you have an unbeatable insert.
We did not have a single leak on either baby when using this diaper. Plus Thirsties has really taken it to the next level by using a knitter right here in the USA to custom knit the hemp textile to their specifications. So this hemp is knit right here in the USA!
So How Did They Fit?
The diaper fit was perfect on both my babies. The duo style diaper comes with a snap-down adjustable rise that is very easy to use. It has three rows of snaps thus offering three sizes in one.
The best part about the duo style diaper is that you will only ever need to purchase two sizes of diapers. The size one will fit the average newborn. Also, you get your choice between two closures: snaps or velcro. The diaper fits well and was not bulky at all. With the lean insert and duo sized diaper, this really makes a very trim system. They also have a double leg gusset that really contains poo.
How Many Thirsties Covers Do I Need?
A wrap or cloth diaper cover can be cleaned using a wet wipe or washcloth and reused several times before requiring a full washing. The manufacturer recommends one Thirsties Duo Wrap for every 3-4 diapers in rotation.
I would recommend six to eight of the Duo Wraps.
After using the diapers, I fell in love. They were easier, trimmer, and more absorbent than anything else I had used. I recently went from being a stay-at-home mom to a work-at-home mom.
With added duties to take care of for work, I decided to simplify everything. This included my diapering routine. After using the Thirsties Duo Diaper, I knew this was exactly what I had been looking for.
The Duo Diaper was easy to stuff, easy to use, and super easy to wash (and no having to pull out wet inserts!!!) Plus I know this is something any babysitter will be able to use with very little instruction. It is just as easy to put on as a disposable, and they are super cute. I promptly placed another order for more Duo Diapers and will now be able to use Thirsties Duo Diapers nearly full-time!
