When most people look at a prefold cloth diapers and covers they think of their grandma pinning it and covering it with a huge white plastic cover. However, this traditional diapering method has come a long way since then! It is still a very economical diapering choice but has a few modern twists to make it an easy and stylish option as well.
What Is A Prefold In Cloth Diaper?
Prefolds are rectangular shaped diapers with multiple layers of cotton, hemp, bamboo or other material sewn into the center. 4x8x4 is the most common prefold size. The most common prefolds are manufactured in China or India.
The Modern Prefold Cloth Diaper
The first modern twist on Prefolds is the introduction of the Snappi. The Snappi is an easy to use fastener that offers a PRACTICAL and RELIABLE way to fasten a cloth diaper, replacing the diaper pin. It comes in a variety of colors and is made from a stretchable non-toxic material, which is T-shaped with ‘teeth’ on each end. These ‘teeth’ hook into the diaper fabric to ensure a snug-fitting diaper with enough natural movement for the baby. No fear of ”sticking” your baby with a pin.
Snappi Demonstrations
This is how to fasten a snappi. First, you’re going to put your diaper on. The snappi is going to grip the end. Attach the snappi to one side, then the other, then the middle. Congratulations, the snappi is on! Put the diaper cover on. Make sure nothing is sticking out. If part of the diaper is poking out, just tuck it in. Once it’s all tucked in, you’ll want to double check to make sure you have a secure hold with the cover.
Diaper Covers And Prefolds
Also long gone are the “plastic pants” of the past! Diaper covers now come in easy to use velcro or snaps. They can come in a variety of stylish prints and colors and are just as easy to use as any old disposable. Prefolds offer the benefit of being used with pretty much ANY style of cover you can imagine! There are even “one-size” diaper covers that can grow with your baby from birth to potty-training.
Are cloth diapers cheaper?
One of the major benefits of using a prefold is obviously cost savings! Prefolds are changed each time the baby pees; however, the cover only needs to be replaced when the baby poos. So you need fewer covers and can save bundles over pocket or all-in-one style cloth diapers. Prefolds can also be folded in a variety of ways to increase absorbency where you need it most!
Prefolds now come in a variety of fabrics as well! You can purchase bleached and unbleached fabric as well as numerous different fibers! There are hemp , bamboo , organic cotton , and so much more! The versatility of prefolds is what makes them a favorite among cloth diapering mommas everywhere!
How Many Diaper Covers Do You Need?
I recommend purchasing 8-10 diaper covers for a newborn, 6-8 diaper covers for an older baby and 3-4 diaper covers for a toddler. Every child will be different, of course, but this is the amount of cloth diaper covers that worked perfectly for us. If you don’t feel your baby will need as many as mine did, you could always start with half of this amount and build up a little at a time until you have the perfect amount of covers for your needs.
How Many Prefolds Do You Need?
Again, this will depend on how often your baby poops and urinates, however, what worked for our family was the following: When they were newborns (the first 6-7 weeks) I started with 3 dozen prefolds and 7 covers. In my experience, when my babies were newborns, they went through about 20 or so diaper changes per day. I added to my cloth diaper prefold stash as my budget would allow, a little every other payday or so.

Folding prefolds for poopy diapers for beginners
So this video will show you how to deal with what we refer to as a super-pooper. If you have a super-pooper, this is how you deal with it. So you have your prefold and much like folding for a baby boy you’re going to fold it linear, one side then the other and when you put it inside the cover your going to make sure you have a little fold at the back. Then the other part goes in the front and then you wrap it around your baby. What this does is the extra little fold at the back allows to catch any kind of explosions. Wrap it around your baby and he’s nice and secure!
